Removing the "NODM_X_OPTIONS='vt7 -nolisten tcp'" line from '/etc/default/nodm' did the trick for me. It prevents the initial shell with the login prompt from starting (before openbox and XBMC does). While this may or may not appear on ION-based systems, it worked for me. :-)

I see the artifacts in XBMC, Boxee and Chrome. Everything works fine and I can do what I want, it just visually un-appealing. For testing purposes I commented the start of XBMC in autostart.sh, leaving me with openbox desktop showing only the cursor................and the irritating blinking of a few pixels at the top of the screen (at the same rate a prompting cursor does). It is as if behind the openbox desktop, there's a shell open prompting the user to login and showing some residu through the openbox desktop.

btw, At system start, I briefly see login prompt right after the disapearing of the splash and just before XBMC starts (/etc/init/xbmc-live.conf is renamed)

If I subsequently type something, the more buttons I press, the more distortion I see. If I exit openbox (right-click menu) it will automatically restart the dektop. When restarted, all artifacts are gone?!?

This occurs on both machines I tested. Not ION based but with compatible nVidia graphics running XBMC live 10.1

Wow, this is a bit beyond my expertise. Does a reboot fix the problem?

I'm not really sure on this, its the first I heard of such an issue. Does it prevent you from doing anything? Or is it just visually un-appealing?

I've noticed artifacts running Openbox. When the system starts just before open XBMC, I see some scrambled pixels. They also appear between launching programs. When I quit an app and I'm left with just openbox, it seems the artifact are related to a blinking cursor. Typing characters or using the arrrow keys up an down just makes things worse.

The effect disappears when I restart openbox. Any ideas?

If you downloaded it with Firefox or Chrome, it should be in your Downloads directory, so you can just do:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo dpkg -i zumodrive-ubuntu8-i386-0.989.deb

The ~ on the first line means "my home directory", so the system will interpret it as "/home/dbares/Downloads". Also, keep in mind that the Linux commandline is case-sensitive, so 'downloads' doesn't equal 'Downloads'.
